POINTS OF BALANCE

I have just recently experimented with the point of balance (center of gravity) of some of my electric foils.
I have a couple of foils from way,way back when, which are usefully bent but rather heavy compared with the modern day blades. The point of balance on these are was round 3-4” in front of the guard. Ideally it should be around 1” to make the weapon marginally point heavy. As these old blades had the slotted collet and grove tangs my options were limited. I found that if I taped a selection of 1/2” nuts to the end of the pommel I could achieve the shift of weight required and still stay within the 1100mm overall length restriction.
The difference in the weapons is really noticeable, especially when using the fingers to move the point.
It is really effective on the newer lighter blades and it has turned what were unbalanced and unwieldy swords in to something I can use comfortably.
I had it easy as I use the French grip but I believe you can get counter balance weights for orthopedic grips as well.
Try it and let me know how you get on.

First night of fencing with the new A/C running. It was 90deg F outside and 75deg F inside. Perfect, with added bonus of cooling drafts of air if you stand in the right place.

This is going to be a great fencing venue.

Cyrano here, maybe?  I visited the club last evening, and am pleased to announce that there have been two AC units installed.  We are still waiting on duct work to be completed.  Sorry, I do not have a projected completion date as yet.  But there is obvious progress.  Building was still rather warm, not surprised with 90 degree plus weather outside.  Several people have contacted via e-mail, expressing interest in our club.  It shouldn't be too much longer before we are able to fence.  Stay tuned, and feel free to add comments to this blog.  We accept anything except criticism.  ":T"

Updates

The Springfield Fencing Club is about to debut.  Construction on the exterior of the building is complete.  Some suggestions are on the table for painting or decorating the exterior, perhaps some additional Graffiti, denoting that we are a Fencing Club.  Or at least the initials SFC.  I have just been informed that contruction and installation of AC has finally begun.  The improvised fencing strip of press board, seems to be working out fine.  There is talk of duplicating it.  Still waiting on running water and restroom completion, but we may be able to fence occasionally while we wait on other construction.  Several members have voiced anticipation about being able to fence once again.  We are inviting all interested parties to come visit our facility.  Although we are not officially open as yet to the public, we are more than happy to show the place off.  Stay tuned for updated postings.  Let us know if you would like to be added to our mailing list.  Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions about the club.  Terrell  217-851-0439.  Or tford2@juno.com
